Building for the Future

Sustainability

The Santa Cruz Mountains is a beautiful area, which overlooks the ecologically diverse Monterey Bay Sanctuary. We believe we have a duty to do our part in maintaining and improving this natural beauty while being good business citizens of our community. As winemakers, we not only strive to produce outstanding wines but also to do it in a way that minimizes our impact on the environment.

There are three aspects (known as the three E’s) to thinking about sustainability in winegrowing and winemaking: Ecologically, Economically, and Equitably. This philosophy applies to both our Regan Estate Vineyard and to Bargetto Winery operations.

We are pleased to announce that in August 2018 Bargetto Winery and Regan Vineyards were formally certified as a sustainable winery and vineyard by the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance.

First, we strive to be Environmentally sound. Environmental sustainability begins with a commitment to caring for the land that has sustained Bargetto Winery for generations. From the vineyard to the winery, we embrace practices that reduce our environmental impact while producing exceptional wines. We generate clean, renewable energy with solar power and improve energy efficiency through insulated winery cooling systems that help conserve resources throughout the winemaking process.

In our vineyards, sustainability is rooted in working with nature. Grapes are hand-harvested to ensure the highest quality fruit while minimizing unnecessary equipment use. Biodiesel fuels many of our vineyard vehicles, helping reduce emissions, and natural vineyard partners—including barn owls for rodent control and horses for weed management—allow us to rely less on synthetic pesticides and herbicides. These thoughtful practices protect our environment today while preserving the health and vitality of our vineyards for future generations.

Second, we must be Economically sustainable. This means making thoughtful decisions today that ensure Bargetto Winery can continue its family winemaking tradition for generations to come. From carefully thinning fruit in the vineyard to crafting consistently exceptional wines, every step we take is designed to deliver the quality our customers have trusted for decades and to build lasting relationships with wine lovers.

Our commitment to sustainability also extends to smart investments that strengthen the winery's long-term success. By reducing energy consumption and improving operational efficiency, environmentally responsible practices help lower costs while protecting the resources we depend on. Over the past decade, Bargetto Winery has invested in renewable energy through solar power, as well as state-of-the-art winemaking equipment, including a top-of-the-line grape press. These investments reflect our belief that economic sustainability is built on balancing exceptional quality, operational efficiency, and a long-term vision for the future.

Third, we must be socially Equitable. Collaboration is an essential part of sustainable practice. Many of our sustainability efforts are most effective if we engage with them as a community. For example, runoff from our winemaking process makes perfect fertilizer for a local florist. Recycling and energy conservation are also among the ways we seek to lead by example and give back to create a more sustainable community for all.

We are committed to being a responsible member of the local business community, striving to retain long term employees and financially support our neighbors. We accomplish this by providing health care to our employees and by giving back to our community, especially through the LA VITA wine program. Every year, a portion of the proceeds of the sale of LA VITA wine are donated to a local charity.
