A winery generates large
amounts of cardboard. Years ago, BARGETTO WINERY had its own "incinerator"
in which the excess cardboard boxes were burned. While it did
provide short term employment for certain young family members,
it would not meet the test of sustainability of today. Burning
cardboard eliminates the ability to re-use the cardboard, it polutes
the air and creates a waste product of ash. Burning cardboard
went on here until the late 1970s when the fire marshall terminated
the practice.
Today, all the excess
cardboard at the winery goes into a large dumpster and is recycled
by our local Grey Bears organization. The Grey Bears is a non-profit
organization that helps seniors by providing food and jobs for
our older citizens. Their motto on the recycle bin reads 'Seniors
helping Seniors for 30 years".
Recycling our cardboard is another step in our commitment to
sustainable winegrowing. In addition to the cardboard, all of the
scrap metal gets recycled through the Grey Bears as well. We protect
the environment and help our community at the same time.
