Vine Stage: New shoot growth
In
May, small undeveloped clusters can be seen on each growing shoot.
Zero to three clusters per shoot is the normal range, however
two clusters per shoot is typical at Regan Vineyards. The number
of clusters gives the winegrower an idea of potential crop for
that year.
Much
time is dedicated in May to removing excess shoots, thereby decreasing
the size of the crop. This work will lead to a more open canopy
and higher quality fruit. With an open canopy, the grape clusters
receive more direct sunshine, which in turn leads to more flavorful
wine.
