Vine Stage: Dormancy
In
the vineyard, January is the dormant season. The soil is saturated
with rainwater, which makes it impossible to operate equipment.
The vines rest leafless, with brown canes blowing during storms.
Vineyard
work is at a minimum, limited to gopher and weed control and equipment
maintenance. Pruning is purposely postponed until late January
so as to lessen the chance that the airborne disease, Eutypha,
can infect the vines.
