Vine Stage: Dormancy
At
Regan Estate Vineyards, February is the month of pruning. Each
year this task takes ten workers and about four weeks to complete.
The primary purpose of pruning is to take the first step in controlling
the amount of crop for that season. In the case of spur pruning
(as shown in this month’s photo), the long dormant canes are cut
back to two buds per spur. In the coming spring each spur will
generally produce two shoots, each of which will yield two clusters
in a typical year.
